UEFA slows down the decision to have Barcelona play in Miami and AC Milan in Australia

A tradition-busting plan to play domestic league matches for Barcelona in the United States and AC Milan in Australia was not made on Thursday.

The UEFA -executive committee said it needed more time to weigh proposals through the Spanish and Italian competitions and wanted more conversations with fans.

Spain’s La Liga wants to organize the ‘Thuis’ match of Villarreal against Barcelona in Miami on December 20 and Serie A wants to move the AC Milan-Como competition to Perth, Australia in February.

The plans are fiercely opposed by more than 500 fang groups in the football supporters Europe Network that is officially recognized by UEFA. Fans object to clubs that are taken from their home community and disrupt the balance between sporting integrity in competitions.

In Brussels, the top official of the European Commission for Sport, Glenn Micallef, has called the proposed game in Miami a betrayal.

There are no similar proposals from the competitions in England and Germany that would receive a stronger recoil from fans than in Spain or Italy.

La Liga and Serie A were financially surpassed by the global popularity of the English Premier League and see an opportunity to build the fan base and the brand for clubs and competitions, according to the example of American professional sports competitions.

La Liga and his commercial partner Relevant, an American marketing agency that was co-founded by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, tried for the first time in 2018 to place a Barcelona match in the city, but were blocked by a FIFA-Veto.

Fresh plans for so -called «out of territory» matches were inevitable last year when FIFA withdrew from a lawsuit in New York submitted by relevant.

Relevent is now an important commercial partner for UEFA with rights granted this year to sell six seasons to broadcast and sponsor deals from 2027 for the Champions League and other European club competitions.

FIFA has set up a working group to revise its rules for domestic competitions abroad, and the 37-person ruling council with Acht van Uefa will meet next month.
