France and Tottenham Hotspur Vooruit Mathys Tel was subjected to racial abuse after he had missed a place in the penalty shootout during the UEFA Super Cup loss on Tuesday.
Tottenham, the Europa League winner, lost 3-4 in penalties from Paris Saint-Germain, with the game, remained 2-2 after 90 minutes plus stopping time.
Tel and Micky van de Ven were the two Spurs players to miss the penalties, while Vitinha missed the opening kick for PSG.
«We was disgusted by the racial abuse that Mathys Tel received on social media after the UEFA Super Cup defeat last night,» Tottenham said in a statement.
“Mathys showed courage and courage to step forward and take a penalty, but those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – who hide behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spray their disgusting views.
«We will collaborate with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against every person we can identify. We stand with you, Mathys,» the club added.
