Unicoi Gap to Deep Gap – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 7

Days fueled by large amounts of food (and possibly a day in the city) seem to go better. It certainly felt good leaving Unicoi Gap today. The climbs out of gaps in Georgia are definitely a challenge.

Trey Mountain Shelter was a good place for lunch. E was there along with two people he didn’t know, Gold Bond and M.

Without a doubt, the strangest tree I have ever seen in my life.

The 13.1 from Unicoi to Deep Gap Shelter tests how good your trail legs are. I usually go about 2 miles per hour and this took me closer to 7 hours to go 13 miles. Sure, I was carrying too much food, but I think the terrain was a bigger factor.

I arrived at the Deep Gap shelter shortly before nightfall. Today was the first time someone lit a fire and when I arrived it was already going out. I think arriving at the shelter so late cut down on the introductions. A combination of fatigue and need to eat meant I only made two proactive introductions.

I’m definitely still discovering food. I thought I would enjoy walnuts, but I’ve barely had them. Carrying around a pound of snacks that I’m not going to eat makes me feel bad, literally. My next post office is in Franklin and I’m definitely going to shed some weight.

• Breakfast: 2x Instant Breakfast, granola
• Lunch: Idahoan ranch instant potatoes, foil-wrapped chicken, rice cake
• Dinner: Oatmeal, pb rice cake, cashews
• Snack: granola, 2 Millville bars, fig and strawberry bar
• Known today: DoGood, Gold Bond & M, Stitch, J
• Days without ramen bomb: 7
