Beanie Baby and I have reached Lake City! We have just experienced some true autumn colors in Colorado and we want to share some of these beautiful views with all of you!
After leaving the butterfly house, Beanie Baby and I got hooked to Monarch Pass and start our walk to a section of the CDT colorado that is immersed in a good cow’s country. While we were not so excited about this section at the beginning, we discovered that the poplars between exit and Lake City were in full colors and that only our spirits flourished.
Our first part of this section began on a very popular mountain cycling path (apparently worldwide renowned), and we met dozens of cyclists along this route. At first we were higher on the crest, with beautiful views of the Sawatch and Los Alamos from below, before finally falling into the country of cattle for a couple of lower and more flat days.

We walked through the burning colors of autumn while we cross this relatively sad landscape compared to what we had just experienced in the university peaks. It was too late in the season to see any cow in this section of the path, but Beanie Baby and I saw numerous cow cakes, some of them huge and covering the entire width of the path.

Beanie Baby and I had a little longer water during the section between exit and Lake City than in a long time. One day, we carry water throughout the day, 22 miles, the longer water transport that we have had from the great notoriously dry division basin. However, as soon as we arrived at the car of Carotopa, we had so much water that we had to vicar the Frigid Carotopa River and we could also walk with some beautiful views of the surrounding mountains covered with bright yellow and bright oranges.

Once we arrived at the path for San Luis Peak, Beanie Baby and I had to make a difficult decision. We were very tired, feeling the altitude a little and more hungry than we had been in a long time. We had a lot of elevation to climb the next and a half day, and we were worried about running out of food before arriving at Lake City. We decided to get out of the path and hook Gunnison from the beginning of the path, where we ate an abundant lunch and bought highly caloric foods such as cheese and butter in Safeway. We found a pumpkin theme hall there, proof that autumn is in full swing! From Gunnison, we got hooked to Lake City, where we decided that we would take a complete day in preparation for the San Juan.

When we arrive at Lake City, Beanie Baby and I found a community that is incredibly cozy for hikers, both of the CT (Colorado Trail) and CDT. There was a beautiful hiker center in the city, led by a local presbyterian church. We met our friend Butter (who also just graduated from Middlebury!) At the hiker center, and we all made some watercolor postcards together. The Lake City Hiker Center also had a free dressing box articles and first aid supplies for hikers and tea, coffee and donuts! Beanie Baby and I enjoyed a relaxing zero day exploring Lake City and preparing for our next section of the path: the beautiful and challenging San Juans!
