Vinicius says no to Real Madrid contract extension after Alonso spat – reports

Real Madrid striker Vinicus Junior has told the club that he will not renew his contract due to a tense relationship with manager Xabi Alonso, several media reported on Monday.

The Brazilian has a contract until 2027 and it is clear that talks about an extension have stalled.

The 25-year-old was visibly displeased with his substitution in Madrid’s 2-1 win over rivals Barcelona. «Always me, I leave the team, it’s better if I leave,» the striker said as he left the field. He later publicly apologized for his post-match outburst, but notably did not mention the manager’s name in his statement.

“Today I would like to apologize to all Real Madrid fans for my reaction when I was substituted in El Clasico,” Vinicius had said on social media. “As I have already done personally during today’s training, I would like to once again apologize to my teammates, the club and the chairman.”

Vinicius started ten of Los Blancos’ thirteen league games this season, but only made 90 minutes four times. Similarly, in the UEFA Champions League, he has started three out of four matches and completed the entire match just once.

The winger joined 15-time Champions League winners Flamengo in 2018 and has won three La Liga titles and two UCL trophies with the team.
