Many computers
It is Banff, Kootenay and Yoho allow open reservations on the Parks Canada website. With a reserve strategy in your hand and attend the GDTA web seminar of questions and answers the previous night, I feel that I am ready. Log in the website with three computers, two browsers each for a total of six sessions. My hiking team, the sale of garage and the map call me before the permits are live with their eight collective website sessions. Discussing the last minute strategy, we all admit our high levels of anxiety of sweaty and nervous public speech palms.
At 8 AM MST we see a visual indicator that expects random tail numbers. One of my sessions had the lowest number, so I prepared for the opportunity and responsibility to ensure critical sites. I selected all parameters for the elusive ball pass. To my surprise, I was available, so I clicks on the Reserve button and proceeded to the following priority, the rock wall section. I selected the next access point and those difficult sites to obtain were also available! I click on Reserve and continued. Everything was fine or at least I thought so. When I went to check my cart, I had this hollow, empty and nervous feeling when I only had the last reserve in my car, which meant that all the difficult places to obtain had gone. Uhg! The sale of garage turned my back and the reserved ball pass when he opened his session. When the dust settled, we had two out of five desirable sites, and some difficult days with long mileage, a lot of elevation and having to leave the main path to the camp. Everything but ideal.
Penalty for thinking like a hiker
He The Parks Canada website requires reviewing and paying reserved sites from each access point. Click the Reserve button does not keep the site if a new access point is selected. This was the very expensive mistake I committed. Unfortunately, this was not clearly identified in any of the sources that I used in preparation. There was a warning that appeared when a new access point was selected, but, in my hurried and anxious state, it was not recorded. Unfortunately, in my multiple attempts to familiarize myself with the reserve process of Parks Canada, I could not completely simulate the reserve process because there are no places available to book before the opening day. Therefore, the opening day was seeing many aspects of the site for the first time.
I turned to Schnerp to get sites that I lost. I selected three sites in the Roca Muro section in Schnerp. In about ten minutes I received a Schnerp alert that there was a place available. When I arrived at the reserve website and selected what I needed, the site was gone. I missed a second Schnerp alert when my computer did not respond. Damn, I lost two opportunities! I was lucky and get a third chance, and I reserved the site!
The good news is that we had a place that would still be a difficult day of Ball Pass, but, better than the 30 miles and 10k of profit we currently had. The bad news is that we need one more place. Lihat juga asd2. I hope Schnerp throws something in the coming months.
Another opportunity
In just two days the Jasper permits opened. Sale of garage and review our strategy the night before and learning from mistakes, we feel better with our possibilities of Jasper’s permits.
When he opened the site, once again I had the first opportunity to book sites. I went after the first priorities and were not available. That did not seem correct because the reserves had only been open for a few minutes. It turns out that these particular sites can only be reserved for a store pad at once. Who knew? He had selected two pads for our group. When the sale of garage realized this, we obtained two separate sites in this area. Again, this was not clear upon entering and there is no way to simulate this in advance. Oh, well, I feel that I want to walk again on the path just to have another opportunity in a more successful permission process!
In the end, Jasper’s permits worked better than Banff’s permits. The Parks Canada’s online reservation system is clearly configured for the weekend and several night trips. It is clearly not designed for hikers. The Hiker GDT needs to understand this and adapt a reserve strategy that adjusts to the Parks Canada Reserve process. It is a pity that the permission process is so difficult. I clearly made some mistakes that lead to our result despite the great preparation effort I made, disappointing. While I felt that I disappointed my hiking friends, (I know they don’t think about it) I hope we repeat us all once our feet get to the road.
