Welcome to the Sierras … no, the walk

The flop

As most of you know, the style of walking through the PCT I am doing is a flip-flop. In a Flip-Flop, you start somewhere in the middle and walk north to Canada. Then it falls and walks south to Mexico. It is arriving at the end of the year, so after the discussion with several other hikers, as well as friends and family, I decided to fall into Carson Pass and walk south from there. This omits a small section in northern California from Chester South to I-80. Also omits section K in California that goes Along the west edge of Lake Tahoe. I walked the K section last August when I did the Tahoe Rim Trail.

So Kevin led me early on Wednesday and left me at Carson Pass. I was wearing new shoes, new pants (the old stretched so much that they were falling), a new shirt (same problem), new socks (holes), and added to my bear boat.

Taking off in Carson Pass

For those people oriented to the equipment, the pants are Or Ferrosi, Jolly Gear shirt, the shoes are Brooks Cascadias, the socks are azaderras of Merino de 5 Pites, Bear Can is the type of carbon fiber of wild ideas. I have been very happy with all of them, except the shoes. I have not decided on them.

Starting again was difficult. Strangely, my left foot swelled on the road (lymphedema) making it difficult to wear the shoes. Then you add the weight of the bear boat and I was really fighting. The new shoes were getting used to and then began to rain. I was wet enough to when I arrived at Kennedy North, I wanted to quit smoking completely. It stinks being wet and cold for several days. There are no views to enjoy, you can’t take long breaks because they cool you, there is no way to avoid moisture.

I also discovered that I had forgotten my Tylenol and my ibuprofen at home, so there was no relief of pain. Thanks to the hiker of the section that gave me something of his Naproxen. The lymphedema was solved at least.

He had great hope for Kennedy Meadows North, who promised a bedroom. I expected to be able to dry. But they had multiple events in progress, so there was no space. I camped in his camp, but there was a party that played music at full volume after 2 in the morning. It was a fairly useless stop and it cost me $ 45. (Not counting $ 3.50 for 4 Tylenol tablets). At least they had my refueling box.

I’m sure Kennedy North is a lovely stop. His cabins reserve a year in advance. But I had such a negative experience here that I am not sure if I would return.

Passing the private dream, waiting for a more pleasant climate and beautiful views.
