What is FIFA’s ASEAN Cup? Which countries are involved?


FIFA President Gianni Infantino introduced a new tournament ‘FIFA ASEAN Cup’ during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

It will be a unique tournament involving Southeast Asian countries, aimed at boosting the development of football across the region.

Who are the Southeast Asians?

Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Does the ASEAN region already have a competition?

The Southeast region already has an ASEAN Championship, which has been held every two years since 1996.

Vietnam last won the ASEAN Championship in January this year when it defeated Thailand to win the 10-team competition.

When will the ASEAN Cup be played?

Details of the tournament are yet to be finalized.

FIFA will work with regional stakeholders including the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the ASEAN Football Federation and relevant FIFA member associations to finalize the format of the tournament.

The ASEAN Cup is held during FIFA’s international competition period, allowing players from leagues around the world to join their national teams.
