Who is Joan Gamper?

The trophy is named after Hans ‘Joan’ Gamper, a Swiss football director who had arrived in Barcelona in 1898 for professional reasons.

A year later he placed an advertisement in the Sport Magazine looking for players who are interested in forming a football team. On November 29, 1899, Gamper and 11 other men joined their strengths and founded FC Barcelona.

What is the Joan Gamper trophy?

The trophy, named after the founder, has been played since 1966.

Initially it was an affair with four teams where Barcelona hosted three other parties. This format (two semi-finals, a play-off of third place and a final) continued until 1996.

Since 1997 the trophy has been played between Barcelona and another team. The host is the most successful side in the trophy and wins 46 times.

In 2021, the first edition of the Joan Gamper trophy of the ladies was played in which the Catalans beat Juventus 6-0. Here too, the host is the most successful side, which so far wins all four editions.
