EBFC defeated Punjab FC in the semi-final to book a place in the top-flight clash on Sunday, with the winner also set to secure a place in Asia’s second continental competition.

The team has had a disappointing season, having exited the Durand Cup at the semi-finals and lost the IFA Shield final on penalties, and will be keen to get over the line.

When was the last time East Bengal won the AIFF Super Cup?

This will be EBFC’s third appearance in a Super Cup final, having reached that stage in its inaugural season in 2018 and more recently in 2024. The Red and Gold Brigade fell to a 1-4 defeat to Bengaluru FC in the first attempt, with Sunil Chhetri bagging a brace while Ansumana Kromah and Miku also got on the scoresheet for the Blues.

However, EBFC managed to redeem themselves in 2024 after beating Odisha 3-2 in extra time to secure their first national title in 12 years. OFC took the lead through striker Diego Mauricio’s goal before Nandhakumar Sekar found the equalizer. EBFC then took the lead after Saul Crespo converted from the spot, but the match was level again after Ahmed Jahouh also made no mistake with his penalty in extra time.

As the match went into extra time, it was EBFC’s Cleiton Silva who scored the winner in the 111th minute, taking advantage of a hasty throw from his opponent. He snatches the ball from a misplaced Narender Gahlot and fires it into the bottom right corner with a left-footed flick.
