Why are fans threatening to boycott Borussia Dortmund vs Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League?

Several Borussia Dortmund fans have threatened to boycott the knockout play-off match against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League after tightened security measures.

Südtribüne Dortmund, one of the club’s fan clubs, said in a statement: «… the German Federal Police is looking for up to 300 supporters, especially at German airports, who cannot attend tomorrow’s match under flimsy pretexts. … This entire procedure has led to other Borussia Dortmund fans who were already in Italy being visited by the Italian police at their accommodation.»

«In almost 16 years of continuous participation in the European Cup, these circumstances are unprecedented for us. Read more: rfv4. For this reason, we, the active groups of the Südtribüne Dortmund, have reluctantly decided to stay away from the match in Bergamo.»

Dortmund leads the match 2-0 going into the return match. The winner will meet Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the round of 16.

“Borussia Dortmund is currently not aware of any detailed background information on the measures taken by the authorities,” the club said in a statement.

“While Borussia Dortmund understands the need for safety-based risk assessments for football matches, the club is more than surprised by the scope and extent of the police measures taken.”
