Why did the England’s Beth Mead take her penalty back in the Euro 2025 final of the women against Spain? Two-touch rules

England defended the euro title of the women after Beat Spain in the final on penalties in St Jakob Park in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday.

This is England -manager Sarina Wiegman’s third consecutive continental title after won twice with England (2025, 2022) and with the Netherlands in 2017.

Why was Beth Mead’s penalty recorded?

After the match ended 1-1 after extra time, the final went to punish the winner. Beth Mead stepped up to take the first penalty and hit it in the back of the net while he slides.

However, the goal was not allowed after it was checked by VAR when they saw that Mead had touched the ball twice as she came out during photography.

The similar thing happened with Julian Alvarez during the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 round of 16 games between Atletico and Real Madrid. The moment his goal was excluded and he had no chance to take it again.

After the incident, however, a clarification was made by the FIFA-supported control panel IFAB in June, which states that a penalty shovel, which is scored after a casual double touch, must be recaptured.

A double fine that is not scored will not be restored. In a shootout, such a penalty is «missed as missed,» said Ifab, and during the rule or extra time a free kick can be awarded to the defensive team.

Beth Mead has to take her penalty again and finally missing the whole business before her team started to win.
