Why has the match between Levante and Villarreal been postponed?

Villarreal’s La Liga match in Levante was suspended by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Sunday due to a severe weather alert over the country’s east coast.

“Due to safety recommendations regarding the heavy rainfall forecast in the Valencia region, and following red alert warnings (from the Spanish Meteorological Agency), the RFEF competition judge has decided to postpone the competition,” the federation wrote in a statement.

Last year, several league and cup matches were postponed after deadly floods killed more than 200 people in the same region.

Third-place Villarreal have impressed this season and are eight points behind leaders Barcelona, having played two fewer games than the champions.

Second-place Real Madrid visit Alaves late on Sunday as they look to close in on Barcelona’s seven-point lead at the top of the table.
