Winless Wolves sack Pereira, club bottom in the Premier League

Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked manager Vitor Pereira after a winless start to the Premier League season stretched to 10 games to finish last in the table, the club said on Sunday.

“Unfortunately the start to this season has been a disappointment and despite our strong desire to give the head coach time and games to find an improvement, we have reached a point where we need to make a change,” said Wolves chairman Jeff Shi.

Wolves suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat at Fulham on Saturday. They are eight points clear of the safety zone and have scored the fewest goals, while also having the worst defense in the league.

Pereira’s departure ends an 11-month spell after he took over as Gary O’Neil’s replacement in December 2024 as Wolves languished in 19th place.

The Portuguese coach brought the team to safety with a run of six wins in a row in March and April, leaving him seventeen points clear of the relegation zone.

Despite a poor start to the current season, club chairman Jeff Shi had publicly backed Pereira earlier this season and rewarded him with a new contract following last season’s turnaround.

Pereira’s departure marks the sixth consecutive year he has left a managerial position.

The Portuguese has had short-term spells in five countries since 2020, managing the likes of Shanghai SIPG, Fenerbahce, Corinthians, Flamengo and Al Shabab before joining Wolves.
