Chelsea’s hopes of a seventh straight Women’s Super League title were dealt a devastating blow on Saturday when Beth Mead scored one goal and added a second in a 2-0 away win for Arsenal.
With 13 of the 22 league games played, Chelsea remains second in the table with 27 points, six behind leaders Manchester City, who play against London City Lionesses on Sunday. The win moves Arsenal to 26 points, three points ahead of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Without an away win against Chelsea since October 2018, Arsenal looked the hungrier of the two sides in the first half, but it took a bit of Mead magic in the second half to break the deadlock.

Powered by Alessia Russo Ten minutes into the second half, Mead fired a blistering shot across goal and past Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton, curling the ball into the far post and momentarily silencing the Stamford Bridge crowd.
That goal brought an uncharacteristically sluggish Chelsea to life, but they conceded a second six minutes later when Mead picked out Mariona Caldentey in the penalty area and the Spaniard shifted the ball to her right before drilling it past the helpless Hampton.
Arsenal’s Stina Blackstenius had a goal disallowed before Chelsea mounted a late attack, but despite a number of shots from distance they could not claw back a goal as they slumped to their second defeat of the season.
