WSL: Liverpool deals Chelsea a blow in title hunt with draw

Winless Liverpool dashed Chelsea’s title hopes on Sunday with a horror 1-1 draw in the Women’s Super League as Beata Olsson’s goal canceled out Alyssa Thompson’s opener to earn Gareth Taylor’s side a precious point.

Chelsea, who are chasing a sixth straight league title, are second in the table and three points behind leaders Manchester City after nine games, while bottom-placed Liverpool have just two points.

Thompson put Chelsea on the scoresheet in the ninth minute when she collected Wieke Kaptein’s cross before cutting inside and curling home past Faye Kirby.

Olsson leveled in the 32nd minute with her third goal in three games when she met Lily Woodham’s through ball and then cleared Millie Bright before calmly slotting past Livia Peng.

“Lily really did all the hard work and then just passed a ball to me. We knew we are fast up front and they are quite slow with their centre-backs, so that was a great ball, I just had to throw it in,” Olsson said. Air sports.

Aggie Beever-Jones thought she had scored the winner for Chelsea in the 64th minute after rounding and firing home Kirby, but she was offside, leaving Liverpool under pressure for the draw.

“We know that playing against teams like Chelsea and the others in the top four is always going to be a tough challenge, but if you stick together and have great determination and score a goal and hang on to it, you’ll be happy with that,” Woodham told Sky.

West Ham United beat Everton 3-1 for their first WSL win of the season to move above Liverpool into 11th spot, Brighton & Hove Albion beat Leicester City 4-1 for seventh place in the table, while Leicester are ninth, and London City Lionesses moved up to sixth with their 3-1 win over Aston Villa (eighth).

Fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur hosted fourth-placed Arsenal in Sunday’s late match.
