Choupo-Moting, Anguissa ruled out ahead of Cameroon’s World Cup play-offs; Onana has doubts

Cameroon has been hit by two serious injuries and faces a possible third place ahead of Thursday’s World Cup play-off against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Veteran striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and in-form midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa have been ruled out of the match in Rabat as Cameroon look to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is also doubtful after an ankle injury, football federation officials added.

Choupo-Moting has suffered a knee injury, while Zambo Anguissa withdrew from training on Tuesday with a hamstring injury. The midfielder, who turns 30 on Sunday, has scored four goals for Napoli in Serie A this season.

Cameroon will participate in a play-off tournament for the top four runners-up from the nine African World Cup qualifying groups, which concluded their matches last month.

This week’s mini-tournament offers the possibility of a 10th representative for the continent at next year’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the US.

If Cameroon wins on Thursday, the country will advance to the final in Rabat against Gabon or Nigeria on Sunday to determine which African team will advance to the intercontinental play-off in March, where the final places for the 48-team World Cup will be determined.

Cameroon has participated in eight previous World Cups – more than any other African country.
