Goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez earned Chelsea a 2-0 win at lowly Burnley on Saturday, a win that moved the Blues within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Despite the visitor struggling to find their rhythm early on, Neto arrived at the back post to put Chelsea into a 37th-minute lead, a lead they never seemed to relinquish.
The hosts rallied in the second half but failed to create any significant openings. Fernandez scored the second goal late on to seal what will be one of Enzo Maresca’s side’s most comfortable successes of the season.
A third straight league win moved Chelsea into second place, 23 points behind London rivals Arsenal, who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Manchester City, which has 22 points, can regain second place later on Saturday when they visit Newcastle United.
With high-profile clashes against European giants Barcelona and Arsenal next, Chelsea rested key midfielder Moises Caicedo. However, the visitor looked disjointed in the Ecuadorian’s absence in the first half.
AS IT HAPPENED | BUR VS CHE PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
Burnley was a happy hunting ground for Chelsea, who traveled to Lancashire in search of a seventh successive league win at Turf Moor.
Nevertheless, it was the host who had the upper hand in the opening exchanges, but he could not live up to the pressure.
Chelsea took the lead with their first meaningful attack. Jamie Gittens’ cross was perfect, as was Neto’s header, the Portuguese scoring his fourth league goal of the season.
A lovely flowing move saw Neto almost score again when he hit the post just after the hour mark as Chelsea pushed for a killer second goal. On the other hand, however, it remained completely problem-free.
Argentine Fernandez could not miss the second as he arrived two minutes from time after substitute Marc Guiu’s impressive tenacity created the chance.
After a mixed start to the season, Chelsea are starting to get going. They have now won five of their last six Premier League games and won three consecutive league games to a clean sheet for the first time since March 2022.
Burnley’s third defeat in a row – all to London sides – leaves the team struggling with 10 points from 12 games.
