Liverpool’s miserable season hit another low point on Wednesday as they slumped to a 1-4 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, their first defeat in the last 14 games at Anfield in the group stages of Europe’s elite competition.
Couhaib Driouech scored a double, while Ivan Perisic – from the penalty spot – and Guus Til also scored, leaving PSV in fifteenth place in the Champions League with eight points. Liverpool, which has lost nine of its last twelve matches in all competitions, drops to thirteenth place with nine points.
The Reds got off to the worst possible start when a bizarre handball from captain Virgil van Dijk led to a penalty for PSV in the sixth minute, with Perisic sending Giorgi Mamardashvili the wrong way and firing home.

The goal seemed to spark Liverpool into life, with Dominik Szoboszlai tapping home an equalizer in the 16th minute after ‘keeper Matej Kovar saved Cody Gakpo’s shot but tapped the ball into the Hungarian’s path.
Til restored PSV’s lead in the 56th minute with a perfectly timed run onto Mauro Junior’s through ball and just ahead of Milos Kerkez, who put it into the net past Mamardashvili.
Substitute Driouech gave PSV a two-goal cushion in the 73rd, after Ricardo Pepi launched a shot from the post and Driouech stroked the rebound. Driouech completed his double in stoppage time when he easily tapped in a cross from Sergino Dest.
Liverpool had hoped the European fixture could bring relief from a miserable domestic season as they had won three of their opening four Champions League games and put themselves in position for a top eight finish and a place in the knockout rounds.
On Wednesday, the visiting team had 26 attempts to nine, including a Van Dijk header that hit the underside of the crossbar. Cody Gakpo also missed a sitter from the back post and Hugo Ekitike was denied by a great save from Kovar.

But the Reds looked nothing like the team that roared to the Premier League title last season, and scores of disgruntled fans had left before the final whistle blew in yet another defeat, with Liverpool already losing more games at Anfield this season than in the entire 2024-2025 campaign.
It was the third game in a row that the Reds had lost by three goals, in Liverpool’s worst performance since an equally dreadful stretch during the 1953-54 season.
