Alexander Isak injury update — Liverpool striker undergoes surgery, when will he return?

Liverpool forward Alexander Isak faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after the Premier League champions revealed he had undergone surgery on Monday to repair an ankle injury including a fractured fibula.

Isak, who joined from Newcastle for a British record 125 million pounds ($168 million) in September, suffered the injury while scoring in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was tackled by Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven and limped off immediately after his goal.

“Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday,” a Liverpool statement said.

“After the diagnosis, surgery was completed today on an ankle injury, including a fibula fracture.

“Isak’s rehabilitation now continues at the AXA Training Center, with no timetable yet set for his return.”

Isak’s injury is the latest setback in his disappointing start to his Liverpool career. He has scored just three goals in 16 games since completing his long-term move to Anfield.

A dispute with Newcastle meant he did not have a proper pre-season program and arrived at Liverpool far behind his Liverpool teammates in terms of fitness.

His season was then interrupted by a groin injury.

Isak’s absence will be a major blow to Reds boss Arne Slot, with Mohamed Salah at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo not set to return from a muscle injury until early in the new year.

It leaves Slot with Hugo Ekitike, who has scored five goals in his past four games, and the little-used Federico Chiesa as his only senior striker.

Liverpool, who saw their Premier League title defense collapse after a shock run of results, have climbed to fifth place after extending their unbeaten league run to five games.

Immediately after the match, Slot admitted that Isak’s injury was «not a good thing».

“If a player doesn’t even try to come back, that’s usually not a good thing, but that’s all I can say,” he said.

«That’s just a gut feeling and nothing medical… let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet. Let’s hope he’s back with us soon.»
