Wrexham’s bid for a fourth successive promotion and a place in the Premier League is gaining momentum.
A dramatic 3-2 win at Queens Park Rangers – thanks to two stoppage-time goals – lifted Wrexham, the Welsh club co-owned by Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, to sixth place in the second tier of the Championship on Saturday.
The top two finishers secure automatic promotion and the teams finishing third to sixth qualify for the end-of-season play-offs for the one additional promotion spot.
It is the first time this season that Wrexham have finished a run in the play-off places.
Wrexham have played 29 of 46 games in their first Second Division campaign since the 1980s, following an unprecedented three successive promotions. The rise up the English football pyramid, fueled by the cash injection by Reynolds and McElhenney since purchasing the club in 2020 and documented in the Emmy-winning TV series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, began in 2022 with promotion from the fifth division.
The latest win came after Josh Windass equalized in the third minute of stoppage time and Ollie Rathbone grabbed the winner a minute later at Loftus Road.
Windass was one of 13 players who arrived at the club as part of an estimated spending spree of around $40 million during the summer transfer window, which saw Wrexham repeatedly break its transfer record.
The money available for transfers has increased as Reynolds and McElhenney have secured outside financial investment, including through the New York-based Allyn family.
Wrexham are also doing well in the FA Cup, having reached the last 32 by beating Premier League team Nottingham Forest on penalties in the third round.
