Defender Millie Turner scored the winner in the 79th minute on Sunday as Manchester United defeated London City Lionesses 2-1 in the Women’s Super League.
But United are still eight points behind rivals Manchester City, who defeated Leicester City 6-0 on Friday.
With six league games remaining, City top the table with 42 points, while United are in second place with 34 points and reigning champions Chelsea a point further back in third, thanks to a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Liverpool.
The day’s entertainment took place in Birmingham and had a distinctly Scandinavian flavor as Norwegians Signe Gaupset, Cathinka Tandberg (twice) and Julie Blakstad all got on the scoresheet for visitors Tottenham Hotspur in a 7-3 thrashing of Aston Villa.
The win moves Spurs up to fifth, level with Arsenal in fourth, on 29 points, after the Gunners’ match against Brighton & Hove Albion was canceled due to a waterlogged pitch.
Everton ensured no end to West Ham United’s misery with a 1-0 win at home to the Londoners to leave the Hammers 10th in the twelve-team league with 11 points, one ahead of Liverpool and two ahead of Leicester, with the bottom side heading into a relegation play-off at the end of the season.
