Day 64 – Bring the miles

This morning I woke up with a little ice in my water bottles. I knew it would approach freezing, so the filter spent the night safely in the store with me. Due to the cold, I stayed in bed until just after 6 in the morning, but I was packed, fed and on the way at 6:30. Miles have been a lot, much easier than the last two (?) Weeks in the year. The path is mostly soft and so far has not had a rise of more than one mile or a mile and a half. It is still quite great, and I do not hope that it warms up today, even though the sun is out and the skies are blue.

The mileage is still quite easy. I am not a fast hiker, but it compensates with slightly shorter breaks, more hours and persistence. Last night there were three tents camped behind me. One was a couple that I don’t know who happened to me about 4 miles this morning. The other two tents belong to the hikers I met yesterday, and both should have passed me for now. I guess they both passed me, but it was early this morning while I still debated when to leave my comforter and enter the cold air in the morning. I currently have the path for myself, and I hope that before the end of the day, some early initiators of Kennedy Meadows North can also reach me. For any reason, and it is likely to be the age, I do not have the mechanics to move my legs, faster and maintain them for a sustained time. I am still in a great pace to finish early until mid -September, so I am not particularly worried. In fact, I’m not worried at all, I just like trying to track where the other hikers I know are around me.

Still beautiful

I’ve been making hikers mathematics again. But also, I realized that I have not had my headphones (even in a year) from the desert. I spent a complete audiobook and a dozen podcasts in the desert, but when I arrived in the mountains, it simply made sense to listen to anything when I had to concentrate so not to die. But, now that the path looks a little easier, I think I can update with the podcasts or even start a new audiobook from tomorrow. Meanwhile, without my necessary concentration to make sure not hurt, I have been thinking about the walk north from Lake South Tahoe. It is 113 miles from SLT to the city of Sierra. The sensible would be to pack five days of food. I could probably (?) Do 23 to 25 miles per day in that section. Four days of that would leave me with a 15 -mile day in the city of Sierra, where I have two packages to collect. That is almost definitely what I will do, but I am tempted to take three days of food, and then hook Truckee after 60 miles. All he does is give me a lighter package. It looks like a lot of problems to save four five pounds for two days, but given how much I have been eating, I think it makes sense to get to Truckee to overcome my food.

If you have read this publication, you know, I reflect, mileage, mathematics too often. I am happy to be able to plan my mileage around the replenishment, and not the mountain passes again.

Even with a few breaks, I reached 20 miles during the day before 5 pm the total mileage for the day will be 22 to 23, which is more than enough to get where I need when I want to get there. I feel good, but not great. I could easily do 25 today if I wanted to, but I am very far from being able to do 30. Maybe these aging legs were not destined for huge miles.
