Lionel Messi will look to add another milestone to the long list of achievements in his storied career on Saturday when he leads Inter Miami against hosts Charlotte FC.
Messi will be looking for his 900th career goal, which would make him along with Cristiano Ronaldo the only players to achieve the feat.
Messi will also look to continue the recent momentum for Inter Miami (2-1-0, 6 points) in the league as it attempts to win a third straight league match. Charlotte (1-1-1, 4 points) gets its first win of the season after beating Austin 3-1 last Saturday.
Messi and his teammates failed to score in the most recent match they played on Wednesday, as they played to a scoreless draw with Major League Soccer (MLS) rivals Nashville in the first leg of their Round of 16 series in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
A bigger concern for the Herons could be the health of defender Maxi Falcon, who left Wednesday’s match in the fifth minute with a knee injury. It’s unclear how long Falcon will miss, but he won’t be available on Saturday.
«We don’t know the severity of Maxi’s injury yet, he will have to undergo tests,» Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. «Hopefully it will be as small as possible, but honestly he is a strong player and if he leaves the game it means he has something. Charlotte’s Pep Biel battled multiple injuries during last season’s MLS playoffs, including knee and hamstring issues, but has looked healthy this season and has been excellent for the home team so far.
Biel, who scored ten goals and provided twelve assists last season, scored three goals in three league matches. Two of those goals came in the win against Austin, and Biel almost scored a hat trick had it not been for a handball that disallowed his future third goal.
«I’m very happy with the two goals, the third is almost here,» Biel said. “But I like to help the team.”
Saturday’s game will be the second in a series of five straight home games for Charlotte as it looks to pick up points and make an early climb in the Eastern Conference standings.
