Despite defending champions Inter Miami missing some of their regular players, including Lionel Messi, hosts Charlotte FC were unable to take advantage, with both sides settling for a 0-0 draw in their Major League Soccer match on Saturday evening.
Inter Miami had won consecutive league matches but played out its second consecutive goalless draw on Wednesday after an identical scoreless stalemate at Nashville SC in the first leg of their round of 16 tie of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Neither Messi nor Rodrigo De Paul made the trip, and 10 starters from Miami’s previous match, including goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, sat out against Charlotte as the club prepared for the decisive Champions Cup match with Nashville on Wednesday.
Charlotte played with its full lineup, earning a 3-1 win over Austin last weekend. Lihat juga tsn4. Inter Miami’s revamped lineup included Luis Suarez, who made his first start of the season, and Sergio Reguilon, who recently recovered from a knee sprain. But Miami also couldn’t get the ball past Charlotte keeper Kristijan Kahlina, who made three saves.
Ian Fray had one of Miami’s best chances in the 34th minute when he headed the ball right in front of Kahlina, who stretched and dived to his left and blocked the ball. Liel Abada had a great chance in the 44th minute, but Rios Novo was up to the task.
The match was very mixed in the first half from both sides, as the teams drew a total of five yellow cards, including three in the first half.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano was shown a yellow card and a subsequent red card for arguing with the referees in the second minute of stoppage time of the second half.
Mascherano will sit out Inter Miami’s next MLS match on March 22 against New York City FC.
