Newcastle United condemned Chelsea to their second defeat in four days on Saturday with a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, thanks to a first-half breakaway goal from Anthony Gordon.
After a 5-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Liam Rosenior’s side showed more defensive weaknesses as Joe Willock easily beat the offside trap and set up Gordon in the 18th minute.
After the home fans booed their team at half-time, Chelsea increased the intensity in the second half but the chances were largely smothered by Newcastle’s organized back line.

The hosts came closest to scoring in the 93rd minute when captain Reece James hit the post from a free kick.
The defeat left Chelsea in fifth place, along with the main challengers for next season’s Champions League places: Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool, who play on Sunday. Newcastle, which have not won at Stamford Bridge since 2012, climbed three places to ninth.
Rosenior must now try to boost the morale of his players for the huge challenge of overturning a three-goal deficit against PSG in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday psf4.
Newcastle plays Barcelona away on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw.
