The trip ahead of today was something that we have heard many murmurs. It is claimed that Mahosuc Notch is the most difficult mile and perhaps the most fun of the AT. People average about two hours in the notch and were supposed to be the end of our day, so we wanted to give us as long as possible.
We clean our camp and use the last of the facilities in this not so primitive camp. I washed my dishes in the sink instead of rinsing them with water and drinking dirty water.
We pile up and our things in Drew’s car and return to the beginning of the path. The first climb of the day was up to Speck. Everything was uphill, but we took many breaks to enjoy the landscape and had snacks along the way. When we approached the Spur Spur, Nick and I Decided that we would opt for not having this round trip of .6 miles and continue. We said ours So longing With Drew and talked about the plans to meet along the path, as well as next year. We have to return to Maine to finish our missing Katahdin piece, so we will make a trip. We went to Speck Pond, then to Mahosuc.
We find some caregivers of one of the Refalachian Mountain Club (AMC) shelters. Until today, we were in the territory of Maine Apalachian Trail Club (MATC). AMC charges for many of its shelters (FKA Lean-Tos), but some benefits come with them. We had some confusion and apprehension about the system, but these two pleasant people helped clarify most of that.
Our lunch place for the day was Speck Pond. There, we were able to filter some water and fill our bellies before Mahosuc. He had tuna salad tortillas and some pretzels covered with black chocolate.
We continue and begin to descend the Mahosuc arm. This was 1,500 feet of loss of elevation in less than one mile. I’m glad we had not to upload it. Sorry nobles!
We find two excursionistas of the section called Shooting Star and Solo Susan (or maybe just Susan). Shooting Star immediately took some magic from trails so we can choose. We chose sour smear swimmers, but there was also a package of coffee, Malviscos, an invoice of $ 5, a herb pepita and lemonade packages. These two ladies were a cry and gave us great suggestions for the next sections.
We start the Mahosuc notch at 2:05 pm. There was a lot of advertising around this section before starting. It ended up being a great jungle gym and quite fun! It was a warm day, and there were many cold air pockets that came from under the huge rocks. There was even some snow and surplus of winter ice!
We finish exactly in 90 minutes and have fun at all times. Only a few miles to go home. Our last challenge of the day was to comply with Fulling Mill Mountain. Little less than 1,000 feet of gain in just over one mile. Pasy easy!
We arrive at our shelter to spend the night, full goose. We planned to stay inside the structure because there were great rains predicted for the early morning. There were two other section hikers inside, but there was room for twelve. It was huge!
We met a man called command, and he and his friend were twenty miles on his day of thirty miles. They still had to make thirty that day, but the opposite. Their motivation was pizza and cake that would be waiting for them in the parking lot in which we started. It started at the beginning of April and was only 78 days. So fast!
We filter the water and install the camp. Dinner was Ramen and Spam. I forgot how tasty spam is, I have to get more of those things.
