Manchester United manager Michael Carrick criticized the referee in the 2–2 draw against Bournemouth after his team were denied a penalty, but conceded one in similar circumstances and defender Harry Maguire was sent off.
With United ahead 2–1, Amad Diallo appeared to have been pulled and pushed in the penalty area, but a VAR review decided there was not enough contact to warrant a penalty, and minutes later referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot after a similar tussle between Maguire and Bournemouth striker Evanilson.
«I think they’re both penalties, and it’s a huge moment in the game, and then it’s chaos. A huge moment, and I don’t understand how you can give one and not the other. It’s crazy,» Carrick told the newspaper. BBC.
«If that’s what he (Attwell) believes, this is a punishment to begin with, then the second one should be. I don’t understand how you can’t give it.»
The lack of a penalty for the Diallo incident took United from a potential 3-1 lead to losing two points in a 2-2 draw, but Carrick paid tribute to his side for their bravery after sending off Maguire.
«Because we had to play with 10 men for so long and had to make changes, the guys from the bench who finished the game did very well. I’m happy with that and see the last moments that could have been very difficult, but we handled it well,» he said.
United go into the international break in third place with 55 points, 15 behind leaders Arsenal and six behind Manchester City. Carrick, appointed as interim head coach in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim, does not expect the break to disrupt his team’s momentum.
“Guys are leaving, and it feels a lot because of the international breakthrough, but we will be ready for Leeds (United) when it comes,” he said.
