First official trail day (Day 1)

I woke up this morning feeling well rested and refreshed. It was hot all night and I was only woken up once by the sound of owls hooting and helicopters flying overhead. I started the day early and left my tent at dawn. After some morning coffee and a Larabar, I was on my way.

First white flames

After just a few minutes of walking, I crossed the Springer Mountain Trailhead parking lot. A trail angel named Mountain Squid was handing out Capri Sun bags and Little Debbie snacks. After a brief chat, he told me he would see me again at Trail Days. I hope you are right.

Today’s hike was much easier than the Approach Trail. It didn’t seem like there was that much elevation gain. At lunchtime, a group of us stopped to eat by a stream. There were some faces from last night’s camp, as well as some new ones. Everyone I’ve met so far has been lovely.

A little later, we stopped for a break at the Hickory Flats road junction. There was a plaque commemorating the former Hickory Flats School (1850-1915), as well as a sign indicating a nearby cemetery. A conversation about the difference between a graveyard and a graveyard ensued, but it was never resolved. I found two bullets along the way, which we assumed were probably blanks from nearby military training. I gave one to another hiker who said he collects things. Some people suggested that I take the trail name “bala” for this reason. I don’t care and I’ll see if it sticks.

Calling it a night

I’ll end the night at Hawk Mountain Shelter and sleep in the actual shelter for the first time. It feels warmer than my tent and I’m glad I don’t have to unpack all my gear. I had a five-star backpacker meal with broccoli and cheddar for dinner and enjoyed meeting all these new people. I find that my homesickness only kicks in when it gets dark and everyone is winding down for the night. Time will tell if this improves. But how lucky I am to have a house worth losing.

Injury tracker

My hip was really sore this morning, but I felt better as the day went on. I hope I’m improving!
