I feel full support: Arne Slot says he has the backing of Liverpool bosses despite Premier League form

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says he feels “full support” from the club’s ownership, even as his team is on a three-match losing streak and faces a trophyless season.

Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final followed a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the last eight of the FA Cup and a 2-1 defeat at Brighton in the Premier League.

The season had started with high expectations following the club’s record summer spend of $570 million on new players following a Premier League title in Slot’s first season.

“The club knows what period we are in. In the meantime, I feel full support,” Slot said on Friday.

Liverpool sit fifth in the Premier League – 21 points behind leaders Arsenal but in the hunt for Champions League qualification. The team, which has recorded a total of one win in the past six matches, will host Fulham on Saturday.

“I feel a lot of support, but not just from the owners,” he said. “As strange as it sounds, I also feel the support from the fans.”

Slot noted the enthusiasm of the fans in Parc des Princes during the warm-up and after being outplayed by PSG: “They were still singing for us and clapping for us.”

Finally ‘salutes’ Robertson’s intensity

Robertson and the club announced on Thursday that the left back will leave at the end of the season when his contract expires.

«What I remember most about him is probably the intensity with which he always plays. We learned something about intensity two days ago,» Slot said in reference to the PSG match, which Robertson did not start.

«This season he didn’t play as much as he was used to. Still a lot, but not as much as he was used to,» Slot said. As a result, he will probably leave next season, but not only that, I think it will be difficult to stay in that position for more than a season.»

Asked whether playing time was Robertson’s motivation, Slot said: «Every player wants as much regular football in the first team as possible, but it is a question you have to ask him.»
