I go or ego – The Trek

Walking for a long period of time makes you realize that the saying: «Some people are there for a season, for a reason and rarely for a lifetime» is true. And I like better the ones that are there for a reason. I say this because some people are as much for a reason as they are for life. But the ones that give you the most value are the ones that you find offer the most.

That’s why we have judgment. We need to be able to judge others to make a decision for ourselves. Sometimes people are just not healthy for us and we have to just walk away.

The reason

I had a negative interaction with someone. Their use of destructive words and criticism of me made me feel as if my values were less than theirs. And I guess I decided that I needed to build some distance between me and this person and demonstrate my values.

It made me think about why we judge people and the importance of judgment. I think sometimes judging someone is how we protect ourselves. And that’s okay, even if you have a bad or false judgment about someone, maybe a false negative is better than a false positive.

We are not meant to please everyone. I’m not here to be people’s best friend. But I feel like I’m here to be a positive force for people. My goal was to demonstrate what a good man should be. And sometimes it’s best to just get out of a situation rather than adding more energy to it.

the season

This is my walk. This is my time to take this journey and be a good influence. And the season to learn things about myself, others and the world. While I’m happy to call this person on friendly terms, I don’t need them for this season, or indeed any other.

So I’m not going to highlight them. The attention they receive for their poor morals is not what I want to do. But what I’m going to do is learn the underlying lesson from this interaction. That is, no matter your lifestyle, your views or your beliefs, as soon as you tear down other people’s values, you are wrong. Defend yourself, but don’t have complexes about it. Your values work for you. And my values work for me. It is not better or worse, we are allowed to believe what we want.

So what to do

I just walked. The serenity prayer is:

“God, grant me serenity

to accept the things I can’t change

the courage to change the things I can

and the wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time,

enjoying one moment at a time.

Accept difficulties as a path to peace.

Taking, as he did, the sinful world as it is,

not like I would have done it.

Trusting that he will make all things right

if I surrender to His will;

so that I can be reasonably happy in this life,

and extremely happy with Him forever.”

I think we must choose the battles we want to fight. We need to be a model for those who are there to listen and ask for help. Because we can change someone’s life for better or worse with the advice we give.

This was a lesson that taught me along the way, which is that we don’t need to waste our precious energy on things we don’t have the ability to fix.

We belong and that should be celebrated.

There are good and bad people, and it’s not exclusive to the gender you were born as. This is the narrative we should be pushing.
