Porto were crowned Portuguese champions (Primeira Liga) on Saturday with two games remaining after a 1-0 win over Alverca, as veteran defender Thiago Silva added another trophy to his illustrious cabinet.
Porto moved nine points clear of second-place Benfica, who were earlier held to a 2-2 draw at Famalicao. Jan Bednarek’s towering header from a corner in the 40th minute was enough to claim Porto’s victory as they won the title for the first time since 2022.
For Silva it was his 33rd trophy. He moved to Porto at the age of 41 and played seven times for the Portuguese giants. He had played for Porto’s reserve team in the 2004-05 season and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in the city.
And the Portuguese top crown added another feather to his cap, maintaining his happy spell with the city and the club.
It was also the 31st title for Porto. It has won more than any other team except Benfica, which has 38 victories.
Former Porto coach Jose Mourinho’s Benfica scored two goals ahead of Famalicao, but defender Nicolas Otamendi was sent off early in the second half.
The hosts hit back to secure a point and leave glory within Porto’s reach.
«This match is a good reflection of what happened in this championship,» said Mourinho, who was dissatisfied with the referee. “I would like to congratulate FC Porto on becoming a deserving champion.”
