Como holds Napoli to a goalless draw as Inter Milan moves closer to the Serie A title

Defending champions Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw in Como on Saturday, a result that means leaders Inter Milan now need just one point to secure the league title.

Inter are nine points ahead of Napoli, who have three games in hand, and a draw at home to Parma on Sunday would clinch the Scudetto. Como, meanwhile, increases its chances of qualifying for Europe for the first time.

Cesc Fabregas’ team is fifth in the standings with 62 points, two behind Juventus, which hosts the already relegated Hellas Verona on Sunday. With the top six guaranteed European football, Como is eight points ahead of Atalanta in seventh place.

Como looked the most likely side to take all three points, with goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic coming to Napoli’s rescue more than once, while Matteo Politano hit the post late on for the visitor.

The first half was largely one-way traffic, with the host creating plenty of attacking power.

Nico Paz created an opportunity early on. His through ball found Tasos Douvikas, who beat Napoli’s offside trap, round Milinkovic-Savic, but he took too long to clear his shot, giving defender Amir Rrahmani time to get back and clear his goal ball.

Milinkovic-Savic was quick off his line and blocked Assane Diao’s attack as Como continued to press forward with the visitor offering little at the other end.

The Napoli keeper was alert to get down and save Martin Baturina’s deflected shot as Como threatened again after the break.

Scott McTominay pulled his effort wide in a rare Napoli attack and Politano’s curling shot from outside the area came back from the position as the away side showed late signs of life, but the title defense is long dead.

Fabregas’ side have held Napoli to two scoreless draws in the league this season and also defeated Antonio Conte’s side on penalties in the Coppa Italia, with the Como boss proving to be more than a match for the manager he played under at Chelsea.
