I was born and grew in Pennsylvania. Like Screapple, chicken corn soup, and my favorite sandwich is Lebanon Bologna in a potato roll. I kept my residence in the AP during the University and my years of the Coast Guard of Active Service, voting as a voter in absence in Adams County, Franklin Township’s voting district No. 1, during all that time. And despite all that, I really didn’t know much about geography in my intermediary. Our backpacking through the region has helped erase that deficit.
Heading north through Pa
Central and I started our walk north from Duncannon on Thursday, June 26. Phys Ed provided us with a trip, a hiker who has completed the AT and that is an unofficial mentor for both of them. Phys Ed had an obligation that afternoon, but came with us through our tour of Duncannon streets, through the Juniata and Susquehanna rivers, on the railroad tracks and the Peters mountain, after which he returned to his car.
It became a hot and humid day. Drinking my water bladder was even a task, since the water was warm. I was trying to find a way to get out of the way for something cold to drink when I crossed a bridge and found Twizzler providing trail magic! Four cold drinks later and after a pleasant, central talk and I left the Twizzler company and we did Peters Mountain Shelter.
Our progress was hindered by two things: heat and rocks. I used to stand when I heard fellow members call my native state «Rocksylvania.» Not anymore. I discovered that the rocks were protruding in the middle of the path, making the fast walk impossible, or they were a series of rocks that you had to climb, one to the other. None was fun, but the first caused me greater challenges (and Dolores!).
The rain left us our second day, arriving at the Gap Rausch shelter after many hours in the rain. The path was like a series of ponds, or a slow movement stream. I complained about this to my wife once, and later that day I received a video from my son that showed Gene Kelly (another Pennsylvania) demonstrating how to dance and sing positively in the rain! I have maintained a positive attitude in the rain since then.
Rausch Gap Shelter was accessed through a side path on what was once a road, most likely for a railroad. This is not unknown, since the AT immediately north of Pine Grove Furnace follows a train truck. Starting a few miles before the Rausch Gap refuge with the site of an old mining village, there were a series of things that gave evidence to old mining and industry in the region. There are old locks from the channel along the path, and a marker on the road indicated that the load in a barge of the channel could have up to 80 tons. I saw ancient coal homes during my walk (wide circular areas, often with darker soil). Going to Port Clinton, the road to the train station contains an anthracite coal exhibition. Central and I stayed in the Pavillion church in Port Clinton. We listen to load trains on the roads on the west side of the nearby Schuylkill River, and tractors of tractors that use their compression brakes just twenty meters east of us on a road hidden by trees. It was ironic that the Freight channel successors were still causing challenges today for the inhabitants of Port Clinton.
During our trip we stayed at the 501 shelter, and then we camped through the road from the Eckvillle refuge. These shelters were unique, being more similar to a hunting cabin (the 501 shelter) and a small shed (Eckville’s refuge) than to traditional three sides. We understand that NP or others plan to eliminate these shelters. And although I do not know the policy or political reasons behind these plans, I hope that the NPS and the ATC ensure that the new shelters are built and works before the old people are eliminated. It would be nonsense to eliminate functional shelters, even those who do not see the part, before building the new ones to replace them.
People and names
There were many Fellow on the hikers we met in Pa. A ferry driver believes that this is the rear of one of the three bubbles, while another believes that bubbles do not exist this year. Anyway, there were a lot of hikers in shelters and shelters, along with unique path names. «Young Guns» bears that path of path because he has a passenger resemblance with Emilio, an actor in a film with that name. «Taxman» was born on April 15, but did not win that path of path until a strange hiker, upon learning of his date of birth, said «» Moon Pie «, a native of Connnecticut, obviously had the habit of showing his naked butt to other hikers. Other trail names that I remember include» Tex «,» Lunch Box «and» Golden. «
I found «devote» along the way. From Bradford County, PA, I was enjoying a long section walk.
A few minutes later a hiking companion appeared for a long time. Wanderer has exceeded AT twice, and enjoy getting on the road whenever possible. It was great to meet him.
Friends
Central and I needed to replenish, wash clothes and shower. There were fewer shelters in that range of the path, so I sent a text message to a friend from my secondary and secondary years. He and his wife, without warning and during a weekend, invited us gently to stay at home, feed, wash our clothes and shower, and then led a long distance to return us to the path.
This friend and I lived in the same neighborhood when we were young. We had paper routes at the same time, then we worked together in a restaurant together, we played in the same sports teams and we jointly committed numerous hi-shines once each one has cars. We married the girls of the hometown, and we both served as officers in the army branches.
I can’t think of a best friend. At the same time, I think we probably vote for different candidates during state and federal elections. I firmly feel that I will do my best to maintain this friendship, since we have many common experiences. I think it is likely to feel the same way. The conclusion is that people who share experiences and points in common, either helping to build a habitat for the House of Humanity, help neighbors or others in their community, or anything else, are much more likely to build on those shared experiences and even become friends with each other. We need that. And thanks to both for their hospitality!
Where we are
Central and I stayed at the Leroy Smith shelter last night and now we are enjoying a nerve in the wind gap. Tomorrow we undertake a slack that will take us well in New Jersey. It will be good to attribute another state in pa. We knew it was time to get out of the way this morning when our coffee was like drinking brown porridge, victim of instant potatoes instead of expected dry milk. I guess it’s time to review our kitchen supplies.
Lebanon Bologna Sandwich
If you want to enjoy an excellent meal, this is my recipe for a murderous sandwich. Take a Martin potato roll of the size of a hamburger, and the light Mayan of the upper and lower part (I recommend the mayonnaise of Duke or Hellman). Place two slices of Bologna of the regular Lebanon in the roll, followed by a slice of Cheddar cheese, and then lettuce. This is well combined with Apple Cider (I recommend Kime’s de Bendersville, PA). In the absence of a dark apple cider, orange juice works well.
Enjoy your summer. Hogmaw out.
