The possibility of Southampton being removed from the Championship play-off final over espionage allegations was raised on Thursday after supporters were warned that changes could take place in the match that decides promotion to the Premier League.
Southampton was charged by the English Football League with breaches of regulations last Friday after being accused of unauthorized filming of opponent Middlesbrough’s training sessions in the semi-final.
The hearing on the charges will take place on or before May 19, the league said Thursday. It added that it still planned to stage the Wembley final as scheduled on May 23, but warned fans to “be aware that the outcome of the disciplinary process could still lead to changes to the match”.
“The League recognizes that this complex situation has caused concern and disruption for supporters, particularly those making travel arrangements, and will continue to provide as much clarity as possible,” the League said.
Southampton then won the two-legged semi-final against Middlesbrough and will face Hull at Wembley.

The league’s statement did not reveal what the possible changes might be and made no mention of possible penalties if Southampton were found guilty.
However, suggestions that there could be an impact on the final raised the possibility that the south coast club could be excluded from participating, or that the match could be postponed.
“The EFL has a number of contingency plans in place should they become necessary, including considering any appeals if necessary,” the league said.
It added that the committee would make a decision as soon as possible.
