On today’s episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, presented by LMNT, we’re joined by Stephen Palazzo, aka Near Miss, an Army veteran, hiker, and peak bagger who has completed the AT, CDT, AZT, and Colorado Trail, summited all 58 of Colorado’s 14ers, and cleared three of the seven summits.
This executes the tactic. Stephen guides us through 24 years of military service, from crossing into Iraq in the first wave of the ground war in 2003 to negotiating with Al Qaeda’s number two over a dispute over solitary confinement and a geopolitically very complicated deployment in Syria. He also shares how hiking became what finally led him to put down the bottle, why his post-trail depression was stronger than anything he’d experienced in the war, and a magical moment in the Wind River Range where he looked up at a moose. And, as Chaunce faces his impending move, his mission is to make every podcast an ultramarathon. This one is sure to give you enough content to get you through the week (or year). Also, warning: This episode contains discussions of war, combat, death, PTSD, and alcohol abuse.
We end the show with an article on hikers’ rights, discussing why a Sawyer filter lasts a lifetime but you’re supposed to change a Brita every few months, the Triple Crown of mountain peaks, a new series of hoodie reviews, a detailed mailbag about one listener’s experience on the San Diego Trans County Trail, and Chaunce schedules an impromptu summit of Mount Rainier.
