Angel di María returns emotionally to Rosario Central after 18 years in Europe


A tear -eyed angel di María was introduced as the last signing by Rosario Central on Monday 18 years after he had left his boys’ club.

Di María, who helped Argentina to win the World Cup 2022, always wanted to return to Rosario, but he received death threats from drug dealer Bendes.

Rosario is 300 kilometers north of Buenos Aires and is a center of violent crime and collisions between groups that want to monopolize drug trafficking.

«After coming home for so long, it was very special. It was what I wanted to play for Central,» said 37-year-old Di María. “Being a champion at Central is all I miss.

«I couldn’t believe it when I was training today. It felt like it was the first time. I really enjoyed my first training session.»

Di Maria joined Rosario Central when he was four years old and made his professional debut at the club at the age of 17 in 2005. After winning the World Cup under the age of 17, he was sold to Benfica.

He then played for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica for the second time and collected almost 30 trophies. He scored against France in the World Cup Final 2022 in Qatar and won the last two Copa -America.

Di María comes from a Club World Cup performance with Benfica. He scored three goals for the Portuguese side, which was eliminated by Chelsea in the round of 16.

«At the moment I don’t think about retirement,» he said. «I am thinking about playing, about enjoying myself. About continuing at every level I did.»
