New Jersey’s public rail system has further reduced the World Cup round-trip fare from the original $150 to $98, the railroad said Wednesday.
The latest price reduction at NJ TRANSIT follows an earlier reduction to $105 in May.
The proposed tariffs had sparked outrage among World Cup fans in the New York City area and beyond, and prompted political criticism from local officials and U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.
Local officials had complained that FIFA stood to make billions from the tournament, while New Jersey taxpayers would bear much of the cost for security, disrupted service and other match-related consequences.

“We have been able to reduce costs while protecting NJ TRANSIT’s everyday customers and commuters from bearing the financial burden,” said Priya Jain, Chairman of NJ TRANSIT.
The agency said the price reduction was made possible by additional advertising revenue.
The FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, starts on June 11.
