Day 20: Have some time to think

When we left our tents, Dad pulled a muscle in his hip. It’s really getting old, huh. I guess I’ll walk a little further today. It gives me some time to be alone with my thoughts.

Before starting a hike like the AT, you’ll often think you’ll have plenty of time to figure things out. You are in the serene forest, what better place to think about life?

Well, you’re usually busy with a lot of things, like a difficult climb or descent, a conversation with your hiking partner, a beautiful view, or your mind is just blank. So, it was nice to have some time to think. Where I would like to work when I return, for example. I haven’t made any substantial progress yet, but that’s okay.

It has been cloudy and quite cold all morning, but in the afternoon the weather cleared up a bit and some incredible views were revealed.

Day 20: Have some time to think

It stayed cold all day, which I like for hiking. You will only have to put on the fleece when you take a break.

A popular refuge

There were very interesting people at the shelter. Bears weren’t on my mind at all. And then I found a laminated sheet of paper at the shelter, listing all the fatal and serious bear attacks over the years…thanks for that.

After Smoky’s we want to get into town for two things: an REI and if possible a pedicure for my dad. I40 is the most logical starting point. There are two larger cities that would make sense: Pigeon Forge or Asheville. So, we asked the other hikers! Asheville came out on top, so Asheville will be!
