After winning Crystal Palace’s first European trophy in his final match as coach, Oliver Glasner must tackle the problem he has avoided.
His future.
Glasner leaves Palace as their most successful coach after winning the FA Cup last season, beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the Conference League final on Wednesday.
Glasner told Palace co-owner Steve Parish back in October that he would not renew his contract when it expired at the end of the season. Yet he said after Wednesday’s final that he had not spoken to any other club.
«I canceled everything so far. I had no desire and no energy to think about it or talk to anyone in another club or say anything about it. I just felt obliged to concentrate 100% on the boys, who deserved 100% from Oliver Glasner,» he said.
«In football, everything I say today will be wrong tomorrow. So what I know for sure is that I’m going to celebrate with the players, have a few beers and fly back to London tomorrow.»
Parish said Thursday there was no chance of convincing Glasner to stay.

“No, I think in the beginning we always knew the trip would last a limited time,” Parish said Air sports. «Oliver has things he wants to do. We are lucky that he came to our club at that time. We have to look ahead and so does Oliver. He will always have a special place in the hearts of all Crystal Palace fans.»
Glasner’s options appear to have narrowed since he made public his plans to leave in January. At the time he was linked with Manchester United, who had just made Michael Carrick interim coach after sacking Ruben Amorim. But now Carrick is United’s permanent coach on a two-year contract.
Reports in the German media have suggested that the 51-year-old Austrian could be an option for Bayer Leverkusen if the German team opts to sign Kasper Hjulmand after he finished sixth in the Bundesliga and missed out on Champions League qualification. That could potentially mean a return to Palace at some point, as both teams will play in the Europa League next season.
Any other option for Glasner, such as Newcastle United or Liverpool, would require an exit from the existing manager, or he could venture into international management.
In addition to a new coach, Palace are facing uncertainty over the future of midfielder Adam Wharton, who starred in the Conference League final and has been repeatedly linked with a move to bigger clubs.
