Murugappa Gold Cup: Tamil Nadu draws with Maharashtra; Karnataka beats CBDT on the opening day

Defense did Centerstage when Teams produced low scoring competitions on the opening day of the 96th MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Invitation Hockey Tournament in the SATT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

Host Tamil Nadu held Maharashtra against a 1-1 draw in Pool-a competition, while Karnataka de Central Board or Direct Taxes (CBDT) broke 2-1 out in a Pool-B-sign game.

Both games were busy with fast breakthroughs, the defense and midfield. But in the last third part, the strikers continued to make a discordant note. More often than not, it was the defense that kept strong.

Maharashtra opened the account against the host when Rohan Patil converted a penalty corner and hit in the second quarter in the middle of the net.

An inconsistent Tamil Nadu hit back through his star, BP Somanna, whose grounder of a penalty corner through the left leg of goalkeeper Shivratna Rasal went in the third.

There was little to separate CBDT and Karnataka in the second and final game of the day. Both attacked with strength and goal, but staggered in the last third, until the second quarter.

While the game was on its way to a climax, Rahul’s Backhand -Flick of a long corner in the dying minutes of the third quarter supplied the required spark for Karnataka. Bharath MahalingAppa’s sizzling Penalty Corner Strike hit the right side of the roof in the fourth, which almost sealed the competition in favor of Karnataka.

The results:

Pool-A

Hutn 1 (BP Somanna 42) pulled with Maharashtra 1 (Rohan Patil 15).

B: (only 25,920, has increased in Bentay 52).
