Late interest from East Bengal blocks Panagiotis Dilperis’ paperwork as Mohun Bagan SG coach

The late drama has gripped Calcutta’s football circles as paperwork for Panagiotis Dilperis as the Mohun Bagan Super Giant coach quit in the evening after a last-ditch interest from East Bengal.

Dilperis parted ways with Punjab FC on June 16 afternoon after informing the club that he had verbally agreed to join Bagan as head coach for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season.

But with the paperwork still pending, the Red and Gold Brigade, now the ISL champions, have contacted the Greek tactician to know if he is still open to a change of heart.

East Bengal won its first ISL title and its first men’s top-flight trophy in 22 years after beating Inter Kashi on the final day of last season. The coach, Oscar Bruzon, had said before the last match that the match against Kashi would be his last match, but expressed his interest in continuing, provided the club made him a better offer, in terms of scheduling.

This isn’t the first time the two teams have been in a race for a player or a manager.

Formerly Lalengmawaia ‘Apuia’ Mumbai City FC’s Ralte and Punjab’s Abhishek Singh Tekcham were both involved in a bidding war, with the Mariners eventually landing the two in their dressing room.

However, as far as Dilperis is concerned, both clubs are keeping tight-lipped for the time being.

However, time seems scarce for both teams as the 2026-2027 season starts on July 25, which is about a month away.
