Will the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between France and Iraq be postponed?
Although football matches are not disrupted during rain, heavy spells and thunderstorms can still cause the match to be stopped.
The match official will suspend the match if lightning is reported within 13 kilometers of the stadium. In addition to the players, even the spectators are expected to leave their seats and go to the hall and emergency shelters.
After the suspension, play can only resume if no lightning is reported within a 30-minute period.
If the weather does not permit, the match between France and Iraq could even be postponed and completed on Tuesday if weather conditions improve.
Have thunderstorms delayed football games before?
Thunderstorms and heavy rains disrupting football games are not all that uncommon in the United States. It was a recurring problem during last year’s FIFA Club World Cup.
