Feeling Grateful (Day 52) – The Trek

At 6 in the morning I was woken up by a songbird that made strange robot or computer sounds. I wasn’t the only one who got out of bed early. PK and Dreamcatcher will leave early today to race towards Woods Hole.

Woods Hole is a special place for Dreamcatcher, as the idea of hiking the AT started there for her. So she wanted to spend as much time as she could there. Which is amazing! But I feel like staying a little longer, so we’ll see you there.

From the waterfall to the Wapiti refuge there was a nice flat stretch. It’s my brother’s birthday, so we called him. It wasn’t the easiest thing with spotty reception, but we made it work.

This section seems to have a lot of deer, we have already seen 3 today!

Next up was a steep climb up Sugar Run Mountain. Ferdinand and dad wanted to get some rest again, but I still felt good and wanted to keep walking. I hiked the last section with two other hikers we met.

Home from home

We arrived at Woods Hole! And they were welcomed with fresh bread and cheese. Since I’m Dutch, I ate bread and cheese every day. I haven’t tried it once since I’ve been here, so it’s been a pleasure!

It wasn’t long before the skies opened and the rain began to pour down. It’s good to be here!

Grateful

At Woods Hole, everyone gathers in a circle and names something they are grateful for before dinner. At first it seemed a little airy, but the trail has made me very grateful for many things. It’s good to take the time to reflect on that.

I am grateful to be able to have an adventure like this with my dad, I am grateful for all the love and support from my home, for the hot showers and home-cooked meals, for the laundry, the porches and the good weather. And last but not least: all the amazing people I’ve met and friends I’ve made here who really make this hike unforgettable.
