Who is Lumumba Vea, the DR Congo super fan, participating in the FIFA World Cup for the first time?

The 2025 African Cup of Nations was a festival of football that provided some iconic moments, all the way to the final and beyond. However, outside the football, outside the controversies, there was a memorable DR Congo fan.

Dressed in a colorful suit, he stood quietly on a raised pedestal, his right arm slightly bent upwards, a statue-like figure amid the chaos. The fan was soon nicknamed ‘Lumumba Vea’, after the figure he paid tribute to.

On Tuesday, Lumumba Vea made his first FIFA World Cup appearance at the Estadio Guadalajara as DR Congo took on Colombia in a group stage.

Who is the fan?

The fan, real name Michel Kuka Mboladena, is a 49-year-old who shot to fame with his stately tribute to Patrice Lumumba during AFCON 2025. He was a regular on television broadcasts and barely reacted or even moved during the match. His suit always featured blue, red and yellow, the colors of the Congolese flag. Other aspects of his appearance, such as his glasses and hairstyle, are also styled to resemble the ‘original’ Lumumba. The pose he adopts is based on a statue of Patrice Lumumba in Kinshasa, the capital of DR Congo.

Before matches, Mboladena claims he trains while holding his hand motionless above his head for 50 minutes. He also mentally prepares himself to remain stately despite the atmosphere around him.

Mboladena was unable to support his team during the World Cup play-off in Mexico in March due to visa problems. There were also concerns that he would not be able to travel to the World Cup to support the team.

Although Mboladena was not present for DR Congo’s first match of the tournament, a 1-1 draw against Portugal, he was able to travel to Mexico ahead of the side’s second match against Colombia due to visa issues.

Who was Patrice Lumumba?

Patrice Lumumba was a Congolese politician and a notable figure in DR Congo’s struggle for liberation from colonial rule. He founded a new political party in 1958, which worked to promote unity and a goal of independence. After Congolese independence in 1960, Lumumba was elected the very first Prime Minister of the independent DR Congo.

Today, Lumumba is still remembered by Africans, and not just by Congolese. Mboladena’s tribute is proof that he remains a big part of the public memory.

While “Lumumba Vea” is also a symbol of strength for fans and players alike, he is also a fan through and through. After DR Congo’s 1-0 extra-time loss to Algeria in the 2025 AFCON Round of 16, he broke down in tears and eventually fell back into the crowd. However, his dedication and presence probably motivated the players to give it their all. Now his place (or pedestal) in the crowd at the World Cup will likely matter to the fans around him, as well as the players on the field.
