Why was Vinicius’ goal ruled out in the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Brazil and Scotland?

Vinicus Junior’s goal in Brazil’s final Group C match against Scotland in Miami was disallowed on Wednesday.

The Real Madrid winger gave his team the lead in the 7th minute, taking advantage of a defensive mistake. He also seemed to be lucky the second time, in the 22nd minute.

But the goal was ultimately disallowed after a quick check by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The winger tried to steal the ball from defender Jack Hendry and surrounded the keeper before slotting the ball into the net to double the lead.

But VAR repeatedly ruled that Vinicius had tripped the centre-back, causing him to lose possession in a dangerous area.

Vinicius eventually added a second in first-half stoppage time, thanks to a cross from Bruno Guimaraes.

As it stands now, Brazil will qualify for the round of 16 of Group C.
