Premier League champions Arsenal said on Thursday it has taken the option to permanently sign defender Piero Hincapie, who spent last season on loan from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
According to reports, Arsenal paid 34.5 million euros ($45.5 million) plus add-ons to sign the 24-year-old Ecuadorian international on a five-year contract.
Hincapie, who is currently competing in the FIFA World Cup, made 25 league appearances last season as Arsenal won the English top-flight title for the first time in 22 years.
He also featured prominently in Leverkusen’s 2023-2024 Bundesliga season, when the side won the German league unbeaten.
Hincapie, who started Ecuador’s first two games in Group E, is expected to play against Germany later on Thursday.
