Germany’s penalty was overturned after a Video Assistant Referral (VAR) in the FIFA World Cup Group E match against Ecuador at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Thursday.
In the early stages of the second half, match referee Tori Penso had initially whistled a foul against Ecuador’s Joel Ordóñez for a foul on Kai Havertz and pointed to the penalty spot.
But after a VAR referral, it was pointed out that Pedro Vite had been fouled by Leroy Sane in the build-up.
Penso had previously made a controversial decision in the second minute of the match after failing to foul Aleksandar Pavlovic due to a high boot on Vite in the build-up to Sane’s goal.
