FIFA World Cup 2026: Australia qualify for knockouts after Paraguay deadlock – Complete player ratings

Australia and Paraguay drew 0-0 on Thursday evening in a result that secured a place in the World Cup knockout round for the Socceroos and will likely be enough for the Paraguayans to progress.

The winner of this match was assured of second place behind the United States in the group, while Australia also secured that spot with a draw thanks to a better goal difference than Paraguay. But the draw that gave Paraguay four points in the group would probably be enough too, barring a string of poor results in the final two days of group play.

This is the third time Australia has advanced to the knockout round after losing in the round of 16 in 2006 and 2022. The Socceroos will play the second place from Group G on July 3 in Arlington, Texas in the round of 32, which will be determined on Friday evening.

Paraguay must await their fate but are in a good position to advance to the knockout round for the fifth time.
