Sweden were dealt a major blow when Isak Hien left the World Cup due to injury

Swedish defender Isak Hien will no longer play a role in the World Cup after suffering a hamstring injury during Thursday’s 1-1 draw against Japan, the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) announced.

Sweden advanced to the round of 32 as one of the top eight third-placed teams and will face France, but the 27-year-old defender has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

“Isak has suffered an injury to his left hamstring that will prevent him from further participation in the World Cup,” Swedish team doctor Jonas Werner said in a statement from the SvFF on Friday.

«He is returning to his club and due to the injury he will be sidelined for a while.»

Head coach Graham Potter expressed his disappointment and pledged the team’s support to Hien during his recovery.

“It is very sad to have to end the World Cup this way due to injury, and we will support him in the best way possible,” Potter said.

«It’s tough for him, but I’m sure he’ll come back stronger.»
